Five “green inovations” for London 2012
This is the sustainability era, everyone knows that. This is the password for every great event that happens especially on this decade. It wouldn’t be different with London Olympic Games in 2012. Trying to be more sustainable and green, London starts some campaigns and measures. This is expected to be the most environment friendly Olympic Games since ancient times. We will list five solutions that the organizers and the English government found to reduce the impact of such a big event.
“Magic glue” against pollution - A solution of calcium and magnesium acetate was poured on streets’ asphalt in order to reduce the pollution on the streets. This chemical has the property to attract the small particles of dust, that will be taken by car’s tires or washed by the rain. London government expects to reduce the concetration of dust in the air in 10%.
Solar tree - During Olympic and Paralympic Games, London will receive some tree lampposts. These posts were made by designer Ross Lovegrove and have LED “branches” and photovoltaic cells “leaves”, that will light up automatically at dusk.
Electric trains on airports - Passengers on Heathrow International Airport, London’s biggest airport, count on a new transportation system. The connection between passengers terminals and parking lot is now made by eletric trains. Known as Ultra, these trains are replacing the diesel buses that used to carry the passengers. The trains don’t need a driver, the passenger chooses the destination on a LED screen and the train travels by electric rails on an average speed of 40 km/h. The airport administration expects to avoid the caos on Heathrow International, that must receive 80% of the tourist who will see the Olympic Games.
“Green” double-decker buses - No, London double-decker buses are still red, but now they are sustainable. The new double-decker buses have a hybrid technology using electricity and “green” diesel that liberates only half of the pollutants issued by standard diesel and is two times more efficient.
Biodegradable packages - London 2012 organization is also concerned about the trash generated on a big event. In order to reduce the problems on this area they will sell food and drinks on biodegradable packages. The organizers expect to reduce the amount of trash descendant from the event.
